History

Presented to the Pope in June 1317. Cairanne was enfeoffed to the Seigneurs: Jacques Elziaire in the middle of the 14th century, Antoine de Simiane in 1593, Paul de Courbis in 1623, and
Jean-Jacques Vidaud who was beheaded by the guillotine on June 25 1794 during the revolution. The old village, located to the east of Cairanne is surrounded by
ramparts which were set up in 1123. From these ramparts you will command beautiful views over the Mont Ventoux and the Saint Andéol Hills.

Close to the Saint-Roch Fort is the Saint-Roch Chapel, built in 1726 whose campanile was erected on the ramparts. The 11th century dungeon is at the top of the hill but is now in ruins. The parochial Church of Saint-Martin, which has both Romanic and Gothic features, is overshadowed by the Chapel of Notre-Dame which was built in 1961 and which is much more accessible. It has superb stained glass windows, well worth a visit.

There are two other chapels: Notre-Dame des Excés (1631, in the old village) and Saint-Geniest (11th century, by the cemetery). Another building not to be
missed is the Château de Gallifet, belonging to the de Gallifet family, which is on the route de Tulette. It has a magnificent ornate living room and a flight of steps with balusters dating back to the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th centuries.

Cairanne is also famed for its vineyard, one of the most renowned of the
Côtes-du-Rhône. The cooperative caves, and the private vignerons produce excellent wines, and it is estimated that this has been produced here for over 500
years. There is a marked circuit which lets you discover the different vineyards of Cairanne. There is also an annual celebration of it (La Fête du Vin) on the 4th
Sunday in July, as well as in April when the year's Produce is introduced.
