A
vineyard city of the ancient Principality of Orange. One of the most
spread out parishes of the Vaucluse, spread over a total of 7000 acres,
stretching from the
River Ouvèze right up to the Dentelles de Montmirail.
The
renowned wine of Gigondas, (a "Grand Crû d'Appellation"
since 1971) saw its reputation really take off after the arrival there
of Eugène Raspail, who brought
with him vinification methods which were revolutionary in those times,
but which were rapidly adopted by the local wine growers; it is also
Raspail who built the
Château Raspail in 1866, by the side of the road linking Carpentras
to Vaison. This castle has a magnificent façade, with detailed
sculptures on it.
Known since 951, but inhabited since Pre historical times, it has
been strongly marked by the Roman occupation; the city was originally
called "Jucunda" after the name of one of its first Latin
inhabitants: Jucundus.
Walking
through narrow streets, you will access the remains of the Castle
and the Church (11th c.) which dominate the village. The ramparts,
dating back to the Middle Ages still exist, although they have suffered
over the years and have lost the higher part of their structure.
The Church of the Saints Côme and Damien was
destroyed almost entirely during the 16th century and was restored
in the 17th. Close by it is the Chapel, dating back to the 11th or
12th century, which was partially destroyed during the course of the
wars of religion. Astride the territories of Beaumes-de-Venise and
Gigondas is the domain of Montmirail (formerly a possession of the
Princes of Orange)
The
mineral properties of Montmirail's waters were discovered in the 18th
century, and it became very renowned throughout Europe as a place
for cures. In the 19th century the Dr Bourbousson created a thermal
resort and it was very popular with people such as Sarah Bernhardt,
Mistral, Albert Lambert flocking to it for a
few days or weeks of relaxing and energy renewal time. Close by is
the Saracen Tower (12th century). In addition to its famous vineyard,
Gigondas, on the sides of the Dentelles de Montmirail, is also a haven
for nature and sports lovers. This rocky bar, surrounded by over 2
miles of hills offers a wide array of activities, such as walking
or horseback riding circuits, rambles, cycling, rock climbing...
