One
of the three Grands Crus of the Côtes du Rhône in Vaucluse.
Its
vineyard stretches from the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail.
The
wine of Vacqueyras, which flows freely on the occasion of the "fête
des vins" in July, is famous since the 15th century. However
its vignerons only obtained the label of "Appellation d'Origine
Contrôlée" (A.O.C) in 1990.
The
village, which is still surrounded by ramparts, is composed of intricate
narrow streets which willl lead you to the Romanic Church of Saint-Barthélemy,
with an elegant Provençal bell tower.
The exact origins of the Castle are not known. It was restored in
the 16th century. Close to the village, in the direction of Sarrians,
is the botanical space of Coste de Coa which offers its visitors over
25 acres of pathways enabling you to discover the plants of Provence.
One of these paths will take you to the chapel Notre-Dame-de-Pitié
(no longer in use) which was erected in 1620.
In 1143, the spelling of the village was Vachairas or Vacairaz. In
1210 Vacqueyras, which at the time belonged to the Principality of
Orange, integrates the marquisat de la Drôme which would in
time become the Comtat-Venaissin.
One of the most famous symbols of the village is the troubadour Rimbaut
de Vacqueyras, born in the 11th century. In addition to his warring
prowesses, he made his name by way of a pretty declaration of love
made to Béatrice, whom he had met at the court of the duc de
Montferrat.
